Director de cine francopolaco. Se crió en Polonia donde sobrevivió una traumática infancia bajo la ocupación nazi. Obtuvo la fama internacional con su primera película, El cuchillo en el agua (1962), y ese mismo año dejó Polonia y se dirigió a Inglaterra, donde filmó Repulsión (1965), y luego a EE.UU., donde realizó la muy exitosa El bebé de Rosemary (1968). En 1969, su flamante esposa, la actriz Sharon Tate, fue asesinada por miembros del clan de Charles Manson. Posteriormente dirigió una expresiva adaptación de Macbeth (1971) y el aclamado filme de cine negro Chinatown (1974). En 1977, Polanski fue arrestado y finalmente se confesó culpable del cargo de estupro. Más tarde violó la libertad bajo fianza y partió a Francia, donde permaneció activo tanto en teatro como en el cine. Entre sus películas posteriores se incluyen Tess (1979), Búsqueda frenética (1988), Perversa luna de hiel (1992), La muerte y la doncella (1994) y El pianista (2002), con la que obtuvo la Palma de Oro a la mejor película en el Festival de Cannes.
